In the olden times, the boat building profession in Nga Bay became a well-known branch name near and far. Now the traditional village mark retains in each spiritual people here.

There are no witnesses or documents demonstrating when the boat building was established. Firstly, some households built camps at Doi Cat, in Nga Bay center, day by day more households built camps, and became a boat village. Boat building profession and Nga Bay Floating market developed parallel flourishing. Many of the first camps are: Mr. Ba Cư, Mr. Ba Phuong, Mr. Chinh Lon, Mr. Bay Thep, Mr. Sau Cuu, etc., and some of their descendents are transmitted today.

Boat camps in Nga Bay specialize products such as: 5-leaf boat, 3-leaf boat, many types of boats from 20 bushels to 25 bushels (400-500kg) up to 250 bushels (5 ton) can transport long way and big rivers. The best selling kind is “nam quang” because it is used for many purposes: taking care, harvesting rice, fishing, and being “foots” back to back. In the old days, buyers wanted to choose water resistant wood such as: sao tree, sen tree, lower is dau nui tree for their boat because it was cheap. From the 1980s to now, good wood is increasingly rare so people use many kinds of trash trees for boat building: mu u tree, mango tree, dau vuon, so called “nam quang” boat, that means we use in a short time and discard them, not repair as well.

Since materials reduce, and composite boat’s appearance so the village has gradually decreased density. A worker said: production reduces regularly every year, which is a sign for the fading of traditional craft villages.

Boats are not only a vehicle but also a special cultural tradition of local people in particular, the Mekong Delta in general. In the future, the traditional craft village will be developed better and better to make an interesting attraction for tourists.
