The Nam Roi grapefruit is pear-shaped, has a peelable skin, many juicy segments, is sweet and seedless. The Nam Roi grapefruit is a famous grapefruit variety in Vietnam, grown in many provinces in the Southwest (especially Hau Giang and Vinh Long). Every year, this grapefruit variety is harvested twice, in August and December. The Nam Roi grapefruit variety was discovered by Mr. Tran Van Buoi (1918 - 1990), a native of Mai Dam village (now Phu Huu A commune, Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang). During his lifetime, Mr. Buoi worked as a merchant on the river. One night, he slept on a boat in Tan Chau (Chau Doc area of An Giang province) and accidentally picked up a fruit on the river. The fruit has green skin and red-yellow flesh. After tearing it open and tasting it, he found it delicious and juicy, and he liked it very much. He took the seeds back to his hometown of Phu Huu (Mai Dam market) to plant. According to legend, Mr. Buoi was afraid that his children would pick the fruit and destroy the precious tree, so he threatened: "Whoever picks Mr. Buoi's fruit, I will beat them five times, do you hear?" Because of his words, the grapefruit variety was called "Nam Roi". The Nam Roi grapefruit got its name from then on. After this grapefruit variety became popular throughout Mr. Tran Van Buoi's hometown, people from other places also came to ask for the tree's seeds to plant. Nowadays, the Nam Roi grapefruit is grown most in Phu Huu and Phu Tan communes, Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang province.
